People Make Place

Coordinating a programme of creative high-street interventions in Manningham

Client

In 2021 Out of Place joined a collective made up of artists, designers and place makers to deliver a series of creative interventions on a high-street in Bradford.

The project, commissioned by Bradford Metropolitan District Council aimed to explore what impact creative interventions could have on communities and high streets in the district.

The team carried out an exploratory phase to identify possible locations and chose Oak Lane in Manningham as the focus for the project. Oak Lane, on the outskirts of Bradford city centre, is home to a multicultural community and vibrant high street that is unique and vibrant but also suffers from a historic lack of investment.

Delivery

Over a period of 12 months the People Make Place collective delivered a series of creative projects including interactive super-hero totems, shutter art, lamp-post banners, flower boxes, murals and a chai cart.

A key part of the project delivery was engaging the local community in each strand of the interventions and we worked with local schools, community centres, businesses and residents to help inspire the design and delivery. This included hosting multiple events including workshops a street party and a film screening.

Out of Place developed a brand and website to support the project and provided design support throughout including the design of the totems, art map, lamp-post banners, and evaluation report.

The project was included in Bradford’s successful city of culture bid and is being used as a case study for future creative interventions in the city connected to Bradford 2025.
