Fettle Foundry is an independent type foundry producing brand-friendly, legible typefaces suitable for a wide range of applications, at accessible price points. Founded in 2020 by our lead designer, Thom, it now stands behind nine typeface families and is the reason type design is a service we can offer as standard, not an occasional extra.

Giving organisations ownership of their own type
Fettle Foundry exists to give clients full ownership of their visual identity, custom typefaces they actually own, rather than licence indefinitely from someone else. That starts with the licensing model itself: rather than pricing by how a typeface is used, licences are priced by the size of the organisation using it, with no restrictions on user counts, social media reach, or where the type can appear. For smaller organisations, particularly charities and others in the third sector, that removes the large licence fees and usage restrictions that put custom type out of reach in the first place.
The same thinking runs through the typefaces themselves. Many typefaces on the market offer only limited support for Latin-based languages. Fettle Foundry typefaces are built for wider character coverage from the outset, with OpenType features like contextual alternatives and language-specific ligatures, so type works properly for the people actually reading it, not just in English.

Type design, now part of what we offer
Fettle Foundry also offers support to students, new designers and small organisations who might otherwise be limited to free, off-the-shelf typefaces. That same generosity of expertise now sits inside Out of Place: typeface design, font engineering and specimen design are capabilities we can bring to client projects directly, built on nine typeface families’ worth of experience rather than a standing start.
