People Make Place - Community Consultation

Most of what we do starts with a strategic question: who are your audiences, what do they actually need from you, and what does success look like? Before we design anything, we make sure we’re solving the right problem.

Sometimes that thinking sits inside a brand or web project. Sometimes it’s the whole project: a feasibility study, an engagement process, or a strategic framework that shapes everything that follows.

01 Our Approach

Beyond the Studio

Our strategic thinking is informed by experience that goes beyond client work. Our directors have been involved in Bradford’s City of Culture programme and have served on the planning board of Bradford’s Business Improvement District. The studio has played an active role in Bradford Digital, helping to build and sustain the city’s tech and creative community. We’re embedded in the place we work from, and that gives us a depth of understanding of how public, cultural and community organisations operate that most agencies don’t have.

02 Our Approach

Who we work with

We work with organisations of all sizes,  from small charities navigating their first rebrand to large public bodies managing complex multi-stakeholder programmes. We understand the responsibilities that come with public funding, the pace at which community organisations move, and what it takes to bring people with you rather than present things to them.

What we do

Audience research and insight

Every successful project starts with understanding the people it’s for. We help organisations build a clear, honest picture of who their audiences are, how they experience the organisation today, and what they need to understand, feel or do differently. That might involve surveys, interviews, focus groups, workshops, data analysis or reviewing existing research. We design the methodology around the question, not the other way around. For the Yorkshire & Humber Secure Data Environment, this research led us to restructure the website around four distinct audience groups rather than the organisation’s internal structure, creating a simpler, more intuitive experience.

Stakeholder engagement and consultation

Good engagement isn’t about asking for opinions. It’s about creating the conditions for honest conversations and turning what we hear into practical decisions. We’ve facilitated more than 100 stakeholder workshops, from local community consultation in Bradford to national engagement programmes, and we’re experienced at working where trust has to be earned, not assumed. When Kala Sangam explored becoming Bradford Arts Centre, we led an eighteen-month engagement process involving hundreds of people across the city before a single design decision was made.

Feasibility and strategic planning

Whether testing a new idea or shaping a major investment, good strategy starts with understanding what’s needed and why. We help organisations explore opportunities, challenge assumptions and build evidence that gives projects the best possible foundations. For It’s On In Bradford, we interviewed more than 25 cultural organisations to assess the case for a shared what’s on platform. The findings shaped the brief and ultimately led to us delivering the brand, website and platform itself.

Place-based and community engagement

Places work best when the people who use them help shape them. We design engagement that brings together residents, businesses, organisations and local stakeholders to build ideas that feel rooted in place rather than imposed from outside. That approach informed People Make Place in Manningham and later Love Leeds Road, helping Bradford Council develop projects grounded in local knowledge and community ambition.

Brand and digital strategy

For us, strategy doesn’t stop with a report or workshop. It carries through into the brands we create and the websites we build, ensuring every decision supports wider organisational goals. We see digital projects as opportunities to make organisations clearer, more efficient and more connected to the people they serve. That integrated approach has helped organisations such as Heart Research UK align their brand and digital presence around a shared fundraising strategy, creating a stronger platform for future growth.

Specialist Skills, in‑house

Every project is different, and some call for a more specialist approach. Alongside our core services, we offer a range of specialist capabilities, from custom typeface design and illustration through to membership websites and accessibility audits. These are things we do properly, in-house, rather than bringing in outside help. If something you need isn’t listed here, it’s always worth asking.

The Numbers

We believe strategy should be based on thorough research and evidence. These numbers reflect the depth of research, engagement and consultation that sits behind our strategic work.

Public body and local authority clients

We’ve worked with the brilliant Out of Place for a number of years now and they are just fantastic. They have looked after our website, brand, and design projects as well as delivered workshops to our team and artists. They have worked hard to truly understand us as on organisation and create work that represents who we are.

They are a pleasure to work with, friendly and responsive to our needs. We’re about to refresh our website with them and I am genuinely looking forward to it which is a far cry from how I have felt in the past with other companies.
