As part of their Extramuros trip to the UK, the HSD Typography class from Peter Behrens School of Arts, Hochschule Düsseldorf came to Design Reviewed for a day of lectures, workshops and inspiration. Matt, our Creative Director, was tasked with turning his own collected fragments of design history into a live teaching assignment , with a vast quantity of items pulled out on display for the students to work with.
History as a starting point, not just a reference.”
From archive to personalised poster
Narrative Utilising the extensive design history archive curated by Matt, the class had the unique opportunity to explore and draw inspiration from over 10,000 significant artefacts. As part of the workshop, students were tasked with searching the archive for specific letters of the alphabet, immersing themselves in the history and craft behind them. Matt then recreated each piece of lettering and designed a personalised, modern poster for every student to print, merging historical inspiration with contemporary design.
