Typeface Design

Thom, our Lead Designer, runs Fettle Foundry, an independent type foundry, and has designed original typefaces used internationally. Matt, our Design Director, sits on the board of the International Society of Typographers and brings a deep understanding of type history and typographic practice to every project. Custom type design is not a peripheral capability for us. It is something we do with genuine expertise.

We designed a custom typeface for Cecil Green Arts, a Bradford-based Community Interest Company of artists, puppeteers, musicians and circus performers, as part of their brand identity project. The typeface gave the brand a distinctiveness and warmth that an existing font could not have achieved.

Custom typeface design suits organisations with a strong, distinctive identity and the breadth of communications to justify the investment. It works particularly well for cultural organisations, arts venues and public bodies where the brand needs to carry significant character and where long-term consistency across a wide range of applications matters.
