Salt Weave Studio creates contemporary woven textiles in the heart of one of the world’s most significant textile regions. Founded by woven textile designer Rebecca Ough, Salt Weave Studio designs its fabrics by hand in Bradford before working with local Yorkshire mills to manufacture the finished pieces.

Starting with the textile archive
The project began not on a screen, but with Rebecca’s collection of historic textile material.
Together we explored traditional textile labels, weaving documents, sheep diagrams and other pieces of printed ephemera connected to the industry. Rather than simply borrowing the aesthetics of Yorkshire’s textile past, we used this material as the starting point for understanding how manufacturers historically communicated provenance, quality and craftsmanship.
Through this research we explored illustration styles, typography, marks and compositions, looking for ways to retain the character and confidence of traditional textile identities while creating something that felt distinctly contemporary.
Two initial concepts were developed from this process, each building on these historical foundations in different ways. The selected direction was then refined across print, digital and woven applications.
The archive gave us a visual language to work from, rather than a historical style to simply reproduce.
Designed to be woven, not just viewed
Creating an identity for a textile studio introduced a practical challenge: the brand couldn’t only work beautifully on a screen or printed page. It had to physically become part of the products.
Salt Weave Studio uses labels at a range of sizes and across different applications, so a single fixed logo would have quickly become restrictive. We developed a responsive family of logo configurations, giving Rebecca different options depending on the available space, production method and product.
Particular attention was paid to the smallest applications. Stroke widths, spacing and details within the logo and wordmark were tested and refined so the identity could retain its character when woven at small sizes.
The resulting system combines the visual richness of traditional textile branding with the flexibility required by a modern independent business, creating an identity that can move comfortably from woven labels and packaging to social media and digital communications.
